A bit more about our home`s history:
The Seger–Rees–Donner House at 405–407 Delaronde Street was constructed around 1850 on land that was once part of the Duverjé plantation, acquired by Barthélemy Duverjé in 1809. After the property was subdivided in 1842, Thomas Rees and Augustin Seger purchased the adjoining lots in 1848 and built the large Greek Revival double residence that still stands today. The house was built during Algiers Point’s rise as a center of shipbuilding, rail transportation, ferry operations, and river commerce. Rees and Seger were partners in a shipbuilding enterprise, and Seger later became associated with the New Orleans and Great Western Railroad. Designed as a rare two-family residence, the house features a symmetrical double-house plan with broad two-story galleries wrapping the façade and sides, classical box columns, Greek-key detailing, six-over-six sash windows, and mirrored interior floor plans. A complete interior renovation was completed in 2026, adding modern conveniences but retaining the historic architectural features of the home. It remains one of the finest surviving examples of antebellum domestic architecture in Algiers Point.
The property is also notable for the large live oak that stands in the side yard of the house, estimated to be between 200 and 300 years old and predating the development of much of Algiers Point. In October 1895, the house survived the devastating Algiers fire that destroyed approximately 250 buildings. Though a barn at the rear of the property was lost in the fire, the main house was spared. From 1912 to 1922, 407 Delaronde was home to early jazz musician Norman Brownlee, who later led one of New Orleans` prominent dance orchestras and recorded for the Okeh label in 1926. During the twentieth century, the property became associated with the Donner family, giving rise to its present name, the Seger–Rees–Donner House. In 1983, the City of New Orleans designated the residence an official historic landmark in recognition of its architectural significance and its connections to the maritime, railroad, and musical history of Algiers Point.
For more than 35 years, the property operated as the Bed & Breakfast on the Point, earning a reputation as one of Algiers Point`s most recognizable historic inns. The current owners purchased the property in 2025 and are honored to continue welcoming guests while preserving the home`s remarkable history.
We’re available to assist you with any needs you may have, 24 hours a day.
